The installation totals 1,204 kW distributed across AkzoNobel’s plants located in Barcelona’s Zona Franca, Vilafranca and Vallirana, and will mean a reduction in its CO2 emissions of more than 237 tonnes per year.

Alterna Energía has been selected by Iberdrola to commission three new photovoltaic self-consumption installations for AkzoNobel in Catalonia

Alterna Energía, a company specialising in the development of turnkey photovoltaic self-consumption installation solutions for businesses, has been selected by Iberdrola to commission three new photovoltaic self-consumption installations for AkzoNobel, a global expert and benchmark in the manufacture of paints and coatings, recognised for its international brands such as Dulux, International, Sikkens and Interpon, and its portfolio of local brands such as Bruguer, Procolor and Titan.

This is a complex 1,204 kW installation on the photovoltaic rooftops of 3 of AkzoNobel’s plants in the country: the Zona Franca plant in Barcelona (722 kW), the Vilafranca plant (389 kW) and the Vallirana plant (93 kW). The project consists of 14 rooftops and 2 canopies with different technical solutions, which has been a rewarding challenge for the engineering and construction team. With this project, AkzoNobel strengthens its commitment to sustainability and resource optimisation by producing its own photovoltaic energy, which will offset its annual energy consumption and reduce its CO2 emissions by more than 237 tonnes per year, while also increasing its competitiveness.

Esther Morlanes, Managing Director of Alterna Energía, explains that “Companies like AkzoNobel are leading the energy transition by promoting the growth of renewable energy within our country’s industrial fabric. For us, it has been a pleasure to collaborate with Iberdrola on another project in order to continue strengthening Spanish companies’ commitment to renewables”.

“Following our People.Planet.Paint business philosophy, this project with Alterna Energía helps us move forward in achieving our global sustainability targets for 2030, which include, among others, the ambition to reduce our carbon footprint by 50% and the goal—already achieved—of operating entirely on 100% renewable energy at our production plants” states Cesar Franch, Technology Manager at AkzoNobel Spain.

By developing photovoltaic self-consumption projects, companies contribute to reducing emissions and bring us closer to the goals of the 2030 Agenda. In turn, these types of installations reduce energy costs and increase competitiveness.
